Photography Project Ideas – Using Red

One of our favourite photography project ideas is to choose a colour and run with it. You can let your imagination off the leash and shoot almost anything – as long as the chosen colour is featured! 

 This week we’re going to use red as an example to inspire you to get out with your camera and have some fun.

There are many ways to begin a photography project, but we recommend sitting down with a pen and pad and making some notes – using something as simple and expansive as colour as the basis of your project means that you could become overwhelmed with possibilities without notes.  

Of course, if your project is just a fun way to encourage you to use your camera it’s perfectly okay to just go crazy and shoot anything that you want!

Photograph letterboxes and the people who use them

See if you can find any old red phone boxes – there are still loads in London if you fancy a day trip!

Red cars are very popular, so try and find as many different ages and models as you can

Photograph people wearing red – this is a great introduction to street photography

If you enjoy using off-camera flash you could create a series of images using red gels on your lights

Get out your macro lens and hunt for as many tiny red things as you can

Start a ‘100 strangers’ project, but focus entirely on redheaded people

Photograph the mouths of people wearing red lipstick – you can run this alongside the ‘100 redheaded strangers’ idea!

Instead of shooting red you could play around with the colours in Lightroom or Photoshop to create interesting and unusual versions of everyday items  

These are just a handful of ideas, but as you can see, the possibilities are almost endless with such a broad subject. In fact, it’s almost as much fun coming up with photography project ideas as it is shooting them!  

When you’re happy with your images we recommend having the best ones printed on canvas so that you can create a themed photo wall in your home.
