Our Tips For Decorating Small Spaces

Our Tips For Decorating Small Spaces

When it comes to decorating small spaces, there are some clear ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ because you have no margin for error!

Fortunately, we’re on hand to help you to turn these tiny rooms into usable spaces without compromising on style and substance.

Small spaces can be beautiful

Small spaces are often seen as a problem because there doesn’t appear to be enough room to swing the proverbial cat! Well, we’re here to tell you that your third bedroom or utility can be as beautiful as the larger spaces in your house. Here’s how:

Let there be light – light is your friend when decorating small spaces, so allow as much natural light to enter as possible. If the natural light is in short supply, choose artificial sources that blend in rather than dominating the tiny space e.g. wall or ceiling mounted, rather than floor standing lamps.

Avoid bulky furniture – a small room is no place for huge chests of drawers or four-poster beds! Keep the profile of the furniture simple and try to use folding chairs to save space when they’re not in use. You can even think about wall-mounted beds and tables – great if the space is multi-use.

Use all of the space – every square foot counts in a small room so use every corner and think about how you’re going to utilise the dead spaces between items of furniture.

Keep the centre of the room free – it’s nice to be able to put a centrepiece in a space, but in a tiny box room it’s counterproductive and will visibly shrink the area – and become a trip hazard!

Think about storage – ottomans and other items of furniture that function as storage and seats are great for small spaces. Use these alongside wardrobes and cupboards with sliding doors because opening-out ones will be too invasive.

Create some style – it’s better to keep your walls fairly neutral and light, but you’ll be surprised at the effect a large colourful canvas print or big rug can have on a tiny room. They fool the brain into thinking the space is much bigger, so don’t be afraid to try it!

We love making the most of all the areas of a house, and think it’s important to appreciate that bigger isn’t always better! So keep this in mind when you’re decorating small spaces, and treat them as the beautiful little rooms they are.
