With just a couple of days until Bonfire Night, many of us are preparing for a cold weekend of saying ‘oooh’ and ‘aaaah’ as beautiful fireworks light up the skies at home and at organised events – but while you’re enjoying the dazzling display, don’t forget to take some photos!

Fireworks come in so many shapes, sizes and colours that they can be perfect for printing onto canvas – these types of prints can work particularly well on neutral walls or plain backgrounds. However, while printing a picture you’ve taken yourself can make you feel like a pro photographer, it can also feel a little impersonal, so here are our top 5 tips for firework photos that will show your family or local area in its best light!

Brilliant backdrop – fireworks can provide a romantic or fun setting for a canvas print; capture a picture of a loved-up couple kissing as the fireworks explode against the dark sky, or gather the family together in the foreground for a stunning picture for the wall.

Kids’ stuff – if your children love the colour and craziness of bonfire night, then you can use it as an excuse to take a fab picture of them for yourself or as a Christmas present for doting grandparents. Have your kids hold hands (using safety as a reason if they’re not keen!) and sit on the floor or on your knees with your camera so you’re at the same height as their faces – then snap away while their heads are turned upwards to the sky. You should end up with some heart-warming photos of their faces lit up by the colours, all smiles, with some of the colourful display also in the frame.

Spell it out – as well as fireworks, don’t forget to take a few packs of sparklers out with you, or use them in your own back garden if you want a bit more space. Stand the kids or family together in a line and give them each a letter of a word to spell out – such as ‘love’, ‘hello’, or even ‘family’ if there are enough of you! On the count of 3, have everyone write their letter with their sparkler, capturing the image on camera to make an awesome print for your home. It might take a few attempts to get it right, but it’s well worth the effort.

Penny for the guy – take some time out to help your kids make a Guy, and use this as a feature in your firework themed photography. Sit the Guy between the kids, with the bonfire lighting up the background for an atmospheric but fun shot. You could even create both a male and female version, and dress them up like mum and dad for a funny twist on the more traditional Guy.

Firework frame – if you’re attending a local, organised firework display, head out a little earlier so you can see where the fireworks will be set off from. Once you have this information, you can start to look at some local landmarks and choose a striking piece of architecture, or perhaps a particularly impressive tree to use as the main foreground image for your print. Then set up a tripod and take as many photos as you can once the firework display starts – you’ll have plenty to look through and choose from by the end of the evening. An old church tower works really well for this idea, framed against the dark sky but with the vibrant sparkle of fireworks lighting it up.
