Christmas Interior Design Tips
Yes, a real Christmas tree can look and smell wonderful, but dealing with all of those shedding needles is a bit of a pain, and a plastic tree just looks a bit tacky, right? Fortunately, there are some great alternatives that cost very little and look really classy:
Tree branches - go for a winter walk in the woods and look for some branches to place in a large vase. Ideally, a single large branch with lots of offshoots that create character and lend themselves to sparse but stylish decoration with silver or blue baubles.
Book tree - pile books up in a tree-like pyramid and decorate with LED lights. This is a wonderful way to embrace the books’ former life and create a Christmas interior design talking point.
Christmas pyramid - build a Christmas pyramid out of old coat hanger wire or buy one ready-made. Covered in white LED lights this is a spectacular tree alternative.
Christmas interior design alternatives
Instead of going crazy with the sparkly stuff, a modern Christmas looks much classier if you choose one or two colours to build a theme. It’s still okay to use tinsel, but employ it to enhance the colour palette of your living space rather than taking it over. If you’ve already chosen one of the tree alternatives we mention above, you can weave that into the overall design.
Baubles are another tricky subject that interior designers rarely agree on. Many feel that they have no place in a modern home, whereas some consider them an essential part of Christmas… as long as they’re beautifully designed and made. We tend to agree that they have a place, but it’s well worth investing in some well-crafted glass ones that’ll last a lifetime (if they survive the kids!).
When it comes to fairy lights, we think that there’s nothing classier than all white LEDs. Simple, plain, small LED lights that just sit there twinkling away are all you need. Resist the temptation to go for flashing ones – unless it’s a headache you’re trying to induce in your guests! You never know, you might enjoy the look so much that you decide to keep them for life, not just for Christmas.
Christmas interior design doesn’t have to be difficult - and it doesn’t have to be boring either - so don’t be afraid to put a little bit of your own personality into it within the framework of a classy Christmas.
