Destination photography inspiration – Prague

Choosing a destination for a holiday with your camera feels a little like being a kid let loose in a sweet shop, and this week we’re going to tell you why we think Prague will provide all the photography inspiration your inner child could wish for – although we can’t speak for the sweet shops!

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a beautiful old world city that’s steeped in history and offers the photographer so many wonderful photo opportunities that it’s impossible to be satisfied with just one visit. Fortunately, the people are so welcoming that you’ll be dying to return and finish your photographic study even before you’ve left!

Photography hotspots in Prague

It’s tough to summarize the ‘must-see’ sights in such a stunning location, but the following should get you started and present you with tonnes of photography inspiration:

Old Town Square – the 12th-century square is one of the most important and historically significant in Europe and doesn’t disappoint the photographer. Every building is beautiful, but your eyes will be drawn to the Baroque Church of St Nicholas, the Rococo Kinsky Palace and the Old Town Hall. There’s always something happening in the square, and the atmosphere is carnival-like every day of the year.

St. Vitus Cathedral – Prague Castle is a sprawling complex of buildings dominated by the spectacular St. Vitus Cathedral, which 14th-century Gothic masterpiece – and one of the most visited and photographed buildings in the Czech Republic. It’s an over the top example of the Gothic period, but that makes it wonderful to photograph, so don’t forget to capture all the frescos and statues inside as well as the looming exterior!

Lobkowicz Palace – also part of the Prague Castle complex, Lobkowicz Palace is home to a massive private collection of art spanning 700 years. It features paintings and statues from masters like Canaletto, Cranach, and Velázquez, a huge collection of war memorabilia and manuscripts from great musicians, including Mozart’s re-orchestration of Handel’s Messiah.

Photography inspiration is everywhere you look in Prague, and even if you had a lifetime to explore and photograph the city you’d still find fresh wonders. We recommend starting your journey with these wonderful sites, before expanding your photo walks to the city itself where the street life and architecture is perfect for the budding or experienced street photographer. We’d love to see some of your Prague images come through our lab – we know they’d look brilliant printed large on canvas as a visual reminder of your trip!
