Three Creative Photography Projects For Spring

If you’re anything like us you’re probably itching to get out and about with your camera now that the weather is improving. This week we’re going to share three creative projects you can get try that we’re sure will improve your skills and give you a lot of fun.

We’re going to throw you in at the deep end with this one, but if you can overcome your shyness a ‘100 strangers’ project can be incredibly rewarding. It’s really as simple as it sounds: you approach strangers in the street and ask them if they mind you taking their photo for a project. If that sounds terrifying the following tips will help you:

Practice your opening request over and over until it sounds confident and friendly

Smile! Appearing relaxed will encourage your subjects to say yes

Don’t be pushy – there are endless subjects so there’s no need to be insistent

Be complimentary – people generally respond well to flattery

Focus on interesting looking people, but don’t ignore the beauty in all faces

Follow these tips and you’ll soon be flying – taking photos of strangers is addictive, and you never know, you might make some new friends along the way!

This project is a wonderful way to get your creative juices flowing because it forces you to look at the world from a long-forgotten perspective. Getting down and shooting from a child’s eye view will make the kind of shots you take every day look interesting again, so grab your camera, go out on a photo walk in familiar surroundings and be prepared to get dirty knees – you may be surprised at how much fun it is!

Photographers are renowned gear junkies, but a famous photographer once said that your best camera is the one you have with you, and for most folks that’s their camera phone. With most modern smartphones being equipped with quite decent cameras these days, this project can be fun and enlightening. It’ll show you that the best gear is no match for a good eye and decent composition.

You can extend this project by comparing the images you get from your camera phone to the same ones from your DSLR or CSC. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much more creative you are with the freedom a smartphone gives you.
