THE FINISH MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

A small gap. A completely different presence.

A floating frame sits around the outside of a stretched canvas, leaving a 5mm gap between the image and the timber. That narrow shadow line lets the picture feel separate from its frame and gives the whole piece a clear outline.

You may know it as a floater frame or a box frame canvas print. Here, it means a canvas print with an outer wood frame, added in the same builder you already use for your photos.

It suits a photograph you want to give a little more importance: a family portrait above a sideboard, a landscape over the bed or one strong image that greets you in the hallway.

LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER

Let the picture float.

The timber edge contains the image without covering its front. The space around it adds depth, especially when daylight catches the frame from the side.

With a dark photograph, black can make the image and frame feel like one considered piece. Against a pale wall, that fine outline becomes part of the composition.

There is no glass or paper mount in this finish. You see the canvas surface, its depth and the surrounding wood. Check the edge treatment in your saved configuration before ordering.

FOUR FINISHES. YOUR KIND OF ROOM.

Choose the edge that belongs with your picture.

Start with the photograph, then look at the room around it. Pick up a colour already in the image, echo a nearby piece of furniture or keep the frame quiet and let the artwork lead.

Four L-shaped floating-frame mouldings in black, white, dark brown and natural wood, shown from left to right with their profiles visible.
Black

A confident outline for dark portraits, bold art and crisp monochrome photographs. It can echo black lighting, handles or furniture elsewhere in the room.

White

An airy edge for colourful artwork and bright spaces. On a pale wall it recedes, allowing the colours inside the canvas to do more of the talking.

Dark wood

Our brown wood finish brings warmth to portraits and softer interiors. It feels especially settled beside darker furniture, olive tones and warm neutral fabrics.

Bare wood

Natural Ayous timber for a light, relaxed finish. Try it with linen, pale walls and coastal photographs, where a softer wood edge suits the atmosphere.

Choose your frame colour in the builder. The room examples below are inspiration for your own photograph.

PICTURE IT AT HOME

Same finish. Very different possibilities.

A frame can give a photograph more presence, or help a colourful print sit comfortably with the rest of a room. These styled examples show a few directions you could take with your own image.

Vibrant red floral canvas with cobalt leaves in a white floating frame above a cream living-room sofa.

White

Bright art. A quiet white edge.

The red flowers and cobalt leaves bring the colour; the white frame keeps the boundary light. Above a pale sofa, the artwork becomes the room's colour centre without asking for lots of other decoration.

You could use the same approach with a colourful holiday photograph, a bold floral image or artwork that picks up one accent in your cushions. Leave clear wall space around it so the full frame can be seen.

Dark wood · brown finish

A personal photograph, held in warm wood.

A black-and-white portrait does not have to feel formal. Warm wood, a comfortable chair and a familiar expression make it feel like part of everyday life.

Above a sideboard or beside a reading corner, choose a photograph you enjoy seeing at close range. The brown finish can connect it to the furniture while the canvas texture keeps the presentation softer than a glazed print.

Coastal landscape canvas in a pale natural wood floating frame above a bed with neutral linen bedding.

Bare wood · natural Ayous

Give a calm room a little horizon.

Pale timber and an open coastal view work well together in this bedroom. There is enough colour to give the wall life, while the frame stays close to the room's linen and natural textures.

For a picture above a bed, look for a crop that feels balanced from across the room. Keep it clear of the headboard and plan a secure fixing that suits your wall and the finished print.

MADE PROPERLY IN WEST YORKSHIRE

A real wood edge around a properly made canvas.

The canvas and its outer frame have different jobs. Solid pine beneath the print keeps the canvas stretched; the surrounding Ayous wood moulding gives the finished piece its visible outline.

We print on 230gsm polycotton canvas using our Epson SC-P20000, then hand-stretch and check the print in our West Yorkshire workshop. The floating frame is an optional finish you add to that canvas.

The moulding has a narrow 12mm face and a 54mm-deep profile. Its grain gives the edge a little character without making it visually heavy. Your photograph stays at the centre.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you choose your frame.

What is a floating frame canvas print?

It is a stretched canvas print surrounded by an outer wood frame. A 5mm gap separates the canvas from the frame, making the picture appear to float inside its outline. The outer frame is an add-on to the printed canvas.

Is a box frame the same as a floater frame?

For this product, box frame and floater frame describe the same outer wood finish around a stretched canvas. It is not a glazed paper print in a deep display box: the canvas surface remains open and visible.

How much does a framed canvas cost?

Our checked examples start at £32.86 for an A5 printed canvas with a floating frame. A3 is £55.75, or £57.00 with the optional hanging kit. Those totals include VAT and standard UK delivery. Different dimensions and extras are priced in the builder.

Which frame colours can I choose?

The builder offers Black, White, Dark wood and Bare wood. Dark wood is the brown finish; Bare wood shows natural Ayous timber. Look at the tones in your image and your furniture to decide whether you want a strong outline or a quieter edge.

How do I add a floating frame to my photo?

Upload your picture, set the canvas size, select Floating frame and choose the wood colour. You can then review the complete price and add a hanging kit if you need one. The frame is ordered with your canvas in the same builder.

Are the sizes the canvas size or the finished frame size?

The listed dimensions are the face of the canvas. The surrounding wood and gap add to the finished outside dimensions. If the print must fit a recess or a tightly measured wall space, contact us before ordering to confirm the overall size.

What happens to the sides of the canvas?

The edge treatment is recorded with your chosen configuration; check it before ordering. The canvas remains stretched around its own support, with the outer wood frame surrounding it. Review the front crop carefully so important detail sits inside the visible picture area.

Does 3-for-2 include the floating frame?

The cheapest qualifying base canvas or poster print is free. Floating frames and hanging kits remain chargeable. For example, three A3 framed canvases cost £139.26 under the offer, without hanging kits. The basket applies the discount to eligible prints.

Can I choose a custom size or a portrait canvas?

Yes, use the size and orientation controls offered by the builder. The examples on this page use landscape dimensions, but your photograph may suit portrait better. Review the resulting crop, price and available options before ordering.

Will a black-and-white photograph work in a wood frame?

Black gives monochrome photography a crisp boundary; brown or natural timber can make it feel warmer. White can be useful when the photograph has a lot of light space. Try to judge the picture and the room together, rather than matching every frame automatically.

Is a hanging kit included?

It is optional. For the five example sizes here, one kit adds £1.25. Larger prints can require the paired kit shown in the builder. Choose a secure wall fixing suitable for your wall and the finished framed canvas.

How quickly can my framed canvas arrive?

Orders placed before 2pm on working weekdays dispatch the same day, using the free 24-hour UK service. Most arrive the next working day. Allow for weekends, bank holidays, remote destinations and possible carrier delays; see our delivery page for the full schedule.
