Good to know

Smart precision shows up to 10 significant digits. Other settings round to the chosen decimal places. Scientific notation keeps very large and small results readable, including values that would otherwise round to zero. Calculations use the unrounded value. Feet-and-inches, stone-and-pounds and hours-and-minutes answers round the smaller unit to two decimal places.

Number formats: 1,000 means one thousand; 1,5 means one and a half. You can also use 1 000 or 1.000,5.

Common conversions, explained

Use these exact relationships for length and mass. Temperature needs an offset as well as a multiplier.

ConversionFormulaExample
Inches to centimetresinches × 2.5412 in = 30.48 cm
Centimetres to inchescentimetres ÷ 2.5425.4 cm = 10 in
Feet to metresfeet × 0.30486 ft = 1.8288 m
Kilograms to poundskilograms ÷ 0.453592371 kg ≈ 2.204622622 lb

What can I convert?

Length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data, pressure, energy, power and angle: 12 categories with 104 labelled units. UK and US liquid measures and decimal and binary data units are kept separate.

Useful details before you convert

Can I enter feet, inches and fractions?

Yes. Try “5 ft 8 in to cm” or “1/2 inch to mm” in the typed conversion box. The first equals 172.72 cm; the second equals 12.7 mm. For a list, enter one measurement per line.

Why are UK and US pints different?

An imperial pint is 568.26125 mL; a US liquid pint is 473.176473 mL. Choose the labelled version. A cup also needs its definition: this tool distinguishes metric cups from US cups.

Does rounding change the calculation?

Precision controls the displayed result. Calculations retain the unrounded value. Smart precision shows up to ten significant digits; very small nonzero results use scientific notation instead of appearing as zero.

Are my measurements saved?

The details

Conversion factors follow standard unit definitions. UK and US liquid measures, and decimal and binary data units, are labelled separately. Some factors, such as degrees to radians, are necessarily approximate in decimal form.
