Photos to canvas, on a bigger scale.
An extra large canvas print gives one image space to become part of the room. It could be a landscape above the sofa, a portrait on an open wall or a favourite photograph that deserves more than a place on your phone.
The right choice brings three things together: a size that belongs on the wall, a source file with useful detail and a composition that survives the final crop. Start with the dimensions you need, then consider the photograph and finish together.
Our current larger canvas listings include A0, 30 × 40-inch rectangles and 40 × 40-inch squares. Supported custom dimensions are priced in the Canvas Creator. It shows the available configuration and price before you order; use it to check the actual size and options you want.
01 / FIND YOUR SIZE
Choose a real measurement, not just a size label.
‘Large’, ‘extra large’ and ‘oversized’ do not describe one universal print size. Look at the width and height. A0 has an 84.1 × 118.9 cm face; turn it landscape and it is 118.9 cm wide. A 40-inch square is 101.6 cm in both directions. They occupy quite different spaces.
These examples come from our current canvas price list. Dimensions describe the stretched canvas face, before an optional outer frame. You can orient a rectangle to suit the image and compare other listed or supported custom sizes in the creator.
| Named size | Canvas-face dimensions | Base print | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 59.4 × 84.1 cm | £59.99 | A-series rectangle |
| 20 × 40 in | 50.8 × 101.6 cm | £72.49 | Wide panoramic rectangle |
| 30 × 40 in | 76.2 × 101.6 cm | £90.99 | Conventional rectangle |
| A0 | 84.1 × 118.9 cm | £96.99 | A-series rectangle |
| 40 × 40 in | 101.6 × 101.6 cm | £105.99 | Square |
For A0, enter 84.1 × 118.9 cm in the creator; for the 40-inch square, enter 101.6 × 101.6 cm. The creator recognises these standard sizes and applies their listed prices. Use the current price list and creator for your exact configuration. A supported custom size can use a different quote from a named standard.
THE SCALE OF A ROOM
See what changes between A1 and A0.
A bigger print needs to make sense beside the furniture and the clear wall around it. Measure the sofa, sideboard or headboard, then test the complete proposed artwork outline. A cut-paper template can tell you more about room scale than a small product photograph.
In the comparison below, both sofas are 180 cm wide. The landscape A1 is 84.1 × 59.4 cm; the A0 is 118.9 × 84.1 cm. Their widths are approximately 47% and 66% of that sofa. Those are measurements for this example, rather than a rule that every picture must occupy two-thirds of its furniture.
View the outline from where you normally sit, and from the doorway. Consider the height as well as the width, nearby switches or shelves, and the light reaching the picture. Leave the amount of surrounding space that feels right for your image. Our canvas and poster size guide brings together the wider room and frame measurements.

02 / START WITH THE ORIGINAL
Give a large photo print the best source you have.
Choose the original camera or phone file wherever possible. A screenshot, social-media download or repeatedly compressed message may lose useful information before the enlargement begins. If someone else took the photograph, ask for their original export.
Inspect the parts that will attract attention at this size: eyes in a portrait, fine lines in artwork, lettering, grass or stone in a landscape. A large pixel count cannot undo missed focus or camera shake. A photograph can also feel detailed at phone size while showing softness when enlarged.
A phone photograph can make a worthwhile large canvas; the file and intended crop matter more than the phone’s name. Read how large a phone photo can print, then assess the actual picture. If a file is too large for the normal upload, use the separate-image route shown in the creator and keep the order reference with the file.
THE CROP COUNTS
Count the pixels left after cropping.
Pixels per inch, or ppi, describes how many image pixels are spread across each inch of the print. Divide the pixels remaining along an edge by the physical print dimension in inches. If those dimensions are in centimetres, divide the centimetres by 2.54 first. 1
Our worked example starts with a hypothetical 6000 × 4000-pixel landscape. Filling landscape A0 retains roughly 5655 × 4000 pixels and gives about 121 ppi. A landscape 40 × 30-inch rectangle keeps roughly 5333 × 4000, giving about 133 ppi. A 40-inch square retains 4000 × 4000, giving 100 ppi.
These are sampling calculations, not a promise that this source will produce an acceptable print at all three sizes. Focus, genuine detail, subject, surface and viewing distance still matter. The illustrated crops also change the composition; in the square version, part of the barn at the left is removed.

| Print size | Pixels after crop | Approx. ppi |
|---|---|---|
| A0 landscape | 5655 × 4000 px | 121 ppi |
| 40 × 30 in | 5333 × 4000 px | 133 ppi |
| 40 × 40 in | 4000 × 4000 px | 100 ppi |
This table is a calculation, not a print-quality approval or a requirement to use those settings. Inspect the actual source and ask about the selected size.
More pixels do not always mean more original detail.
Changing a file’s resolution label to 300 ppi without resampling leaves its pixel dimensions unchanged. At a chosen physical print size, the same pixels still have to cover the same area. The label alone cannot make a large canvas sharper.
Resampling adds or removes pixels. Enlarging software estimates new pixel values, and AI tools can supply plausible detail. That may change the appearance, but it does not verify a missing facial feature, word or texture. Keep the original and review any enhanced version carefully. 2
For an image with insufficient useful detail, the better choice may be a stronger source, a smaller canvas or a less severe crop. A textured canvas surface is a presentation choice; it is not a reliable cure for a poor photograph. Ask us about your intended file and size before ordering if you are unsure.
Choose the shape that keeps the photograph intact.
A square, a conventional rectangle and a panoramic canvas can tell different versions of the same scene. A broad landscape may lose its sense of space in a tight square crop. A group portrait can lose people near the sides. Decide what must remain on the front before choosing the shape.
Supported custom dimensions can help when a photograph or wall needs a particular proportion. Enter the correct units and check both width and height in the creator. A small change from a named standard size can use a different custom price, so compare the actual options rather than assuming the nearest standard price applies.
Check canvas sides after the front composition. Gallery wrap continues the image around the edges; mirrored or plain sides give another presentation where offered. A side treatment does not restore content removed by a different front-face crop. The canvas-edges guide explains that step in more detail.
03 / FINISH THE PICTURE
Consider the canvas face, its depth and the outer frame.
A stretched canvas has its own supporting frame beneath the fabric. Slim and Chunky refer to the depth of that canvas: nominally 0.75 inches and 1.75 inches. Choose from the finishes offered for your selected size. Extra depth changes the side profile, while the named front dimensions stay the same.
A floating frame is an additional outer wood frame around the stretched canvas. You may also see it described as a floater frame or box frame canvas print. It gives the image a surrounding outline and a shadow gap, and increases the complete display’s width and height.
If the canvas must fit between shelves or within a recess, confirm the outside dimensions of the whole framed piece. Check frame availability and the complete quote for the chosen size; a frame option at one size is not evidence that it is offered at every larger dimension. Explore our floating frame canvas prints for the finish choices.

MADE PROPERLY. IN YORKSHIRE.
Large-format canvas printing, finished by hand.
We print onto 230gsm poly-cotton canvas using our Epson SC-P20000, then stretch the image over solid pine and finish it in our West Yorkshire workshop. The photograph, crop and selected size receive a human check before production.
For a large print, the source and finished composition are as important as the materials. Tell us about a person or detail that must stay visible, and review the configuration you approve. A website composition preview helps you judge placement; it is not a measured promise that every screen colour will match the physical canvas.
See our canvas materials and finishes alongside this size-focused page. The aim is a well-chosen photograph made substantial, with the detail and atmosphere you intended.
THE WHOLE PRICE
Compare the complete large-canvas price.
Start with the base price for your actual size, then include any outer frame, hanging kit and applicable delivery charges. For example, the listed A0 base is £96.99. The current optional paired hanging kit for a longest side above 40 inches is £2.50, giving £99.49 for that example before any destination charge, with no outer floating frame.
Qualifying Canvas and Poster prints can be mixed under 3 for 2: the cheapest eligible base print is free. Frames, accessories and delivery supplements remain chargeable. Check the itemised basket rather than treating the whole framed or upgraded item as free.
Custom dimensions have their own calculated quote. Use the current sizes and custom-size calculator, or the worked canvas-cost guide, to compare the configuration you actually want.
DELIVERY, EXPLAINED
Large on the wall does not always mean an oversize charge.
The named examples in the price table are below the published oversized-canvas threshold. Standard UK delivery is included in their listed base prices. Larger supported custom canvases can cross a delivery band, and destination-specific charges may also apply.
Our current price guide lists a £12 oversized-canvas supplement when the longest side exceeds 140 cm, or £30 above 190 cm. The £30 band replaces the £12 band; the charges do not add together. Confirm the total for the selected order before paying.
| Published longest-side band | Oversized supplement | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Longest side up to and including 140 cm | None under this size rule | No oversized supplement under the published size rule; destination charges can still apply. |
| Above 140 cm, up to and including 190 cm | £12.00 | For a supported size. Check the complete order quote. |
| Above 190 cm | £30.00 | For a supported size. Replaces the £12 band; does not stack. |
For normal working weekdays, orders placed before 2pm are advertised for same-day dispatch, with next-working-day arrival expected on the 24-hour service. Arrival is not guaranteed; bank holidays, remote destinations and carrier disruption can affect it. Check the delivery information and your actual order details, particularly for a time-sensitive or unusually large print.
Plan the whole journey from parcel to wall.
For a particularly large piece, think about access as well as display. Check doorways, stair turns and the route into the room. If the fit is tight, ask about the packed outside dimensions before ordering; the packaging occupies more space than the canvas face.
Choose wall fixings for the actual wall material and complete finished weight, following the fixing and hanging-system instructions. An optional kit does not establish that one fixing suits every wall. Ask about the completed piece or use a suitable installer if you are unsure.
Mark the complete artwork outline first, including any outer frame. Consider where you will pass it, the clear space around it and how it will be viewed. A thoughtful placement helps the photograph feel settled rather than simply very big.

THE USEFUL ANSWERS
Your large-canvas questions, answered.
What counts as an extra large canvas print?
There is no universal measurement behind the label. Compare the actual width and height. Current larger YI2C listings include A0, 30 × 40-inch rectangles and 40 × 40-inch squares, with supported custom dimensions quoted in the creator.
What is the largest canvas size I can order?
Use Canvas Creator to check its current limits for both width and height, along with the finishing options for the requested size. The named examples on this page do not establish an unlimited custom range. Ask us about a dimension that is not offered before planning the installation.
How big is an A0 canvas?
Its face is 84.1 × 118.9 cm in portrait orientation, or 118.9 × 84.1 cm in landscape. An optional outer floating frame adds to the complete outside dimensions.
Can I make a large canvas from a phone photo?
Yes, where the original file, crop and useful detail suit the selected print. The phone model alone does not decide suitability. Keep the original file and ask about the intended enlargement if you are unsure.
How many pixels do I need for a large canvas?
Calculate from the pixels left after cropping and the physical print dimensions, then inspect the actual image. More pixels can support greater sampling density, but focus and genuine detail still matter. The worked examples on this page are comparison points, not guaranteed minimum-quality thresholds.
Will saving my file as 300 DPI improve it?
Changing a resolution label without resampling does not add pixels. At the same physical size, the original pixels still cover the same area. Resampling changes the pixel count but does not guarantee recovery of missing original detail.
Can I choose a custom large canvas size?
Enter the exact width and height in the creator, with the correct units, within its supported limits. Check the resulting crop, available finishes and calculated price. A custom size can use a different price from a nearby named standard.
Will a square canvas crop my landscape photograph?
Filling a square with a wider photograph usually removes content at the sides unless you prepare a different composition. Check the retained subjects and remaining pixels. The square crop in our example removes part of the barn.
Do mirrored sides prevent every kind of crop?
No. Mirrored sides concern the canvas-edge presentation. A front-face crop caused by a different print proportion is a separate decision. Review both the front composition and the offered side treatment.
Can I choose Slim or Chunky for an extra large canvas?
Choose from the depth options shown for the actual size in the creator. Slim and Chunky describe different side profiles; they do not change the named front dimensions. Do not assume every configuration is available at every custom size.
Can a large canvas have a floating or box frame?
Where offered for the selected size, add the outer frame in the creator and review the full quote. Confirm availability and overall display dimensions for a particularly large or tightly fitted piece.
Is the quoted size the full framed width?
The named canvas size describes the canvas face. A surrounding floating frame adds to the complete display footprint. Ask for the finished outside dimensions if the piece must fit between shelves or within a recess.
Is delivery free for large canvas prints?
The named examples here include standard UK delivery in their listed base prices and are below the published oversized-size threshold. Supported larger custom orders or particular destinations can attract a charge. Check the current size bands and the complete order quote.
Does 3 for 2 apply to larger canvases?
Qualifying Canvas and Poster prints use the offer: the cheapest eligible base print is free. Optional frames, kits and applicable delivery supplements remain payable. Review the itemised basket for your actual selection.
Is a hanging kit included with my canvas?
It is optional. The creator and price guide show the accessory offered for your size. Choose suitable wall fixings for the actual wall material and complete finished weight; a kit does not establish that one wall fixing works everywhere.
Can I ask about quality before ordering a large print?
Contact YI2C with the best original file, the proposed dimensions and any important crop or detail concerns. That gives us a clearer basis for discussing suitability than a screenshot or file size in megabytes alone.
