Print Your Photo as a Poster: Sizes, Files and Framing

Your own artwork, a family photograph, a pet portrait or a favourite holiday shot: good poster printing should do justice to the picture. Start with your original image, choose a size that suits it and check the crop before it reaches the printer.

At Your Image 2 Canvas, we print on 230gsm Fine Art Pure White Matt paper in our West Yorkshire workshop. Every poster receives the same paper and professional printing process, whether you are an artist preparing work to sell or choosing a photograph for a frame you already own. Posters arrive unframed. Standard sizes shown in this guide include free delivery. Custom posters over 140cm on the longest side currently carry a £12 delivery charge; check the complete quote in the creator before ordering.

How we print your posters

We print your posters using an Epson SureColor SC-P20000 and genuine Epson UltraChrome PRO pigment inks. The paper is 230gsm Fine Art Pure White Matt, with a clean white base and a smooth, matt finish that lets the picture take centre stage.

We also use ONYX RIP software and a colour profile matched to our paper and printing setup. In plain English, that helps manage how the colours in your file are translated through the printer, inks and paper.

The paper, inks and colour-managed workflow are included in the price; there is no paper-quality upgrade to add.

For your artwork, your photographs and your existing frame

If you are an artist, illustrator or photographer, you can use poster printing for your own finished artwork as well as photographs. Send a good digital original or a careful scan, choose the proportions that suit the work and review any crop. Keep an untouched master file so you can prepare other sizes without repeatedly editing the original.

For a home display, a matt paper print gives you freedom over the frame and mount. A wedding picture, a child’s drawing or a favourite landscape can all have a proper place on the wall.

Have a frame from IKEA or another retailer already waiting? Use the measuring advice below to choose a matching standard or supported custom size.

Paper can also be a useful choice when small lettering or fine graphic detail is important. A textured canvas changes the surface of an image, which may be part of its appeal. Neither finish improves an unsuitable source photograph automatically. Compare the look you want, the space available and the way you plan to display it.

If you are deciding between the two formats, our poster-or-canvas guide explains the practical differences. Choose a stretched canvas when you want the photograph on a fabric surface over a wooden frame. Choose a poster when you want a paper print to frame your way.

Start with the original photograph

Use the best version of the image you have, ideally the original saved on the phone, camera or photographer’s download service. A screenshot may include a gallery interface, unwanted borders or fewer pixels. A picture forwarded through a messaging service can also differ from the original.

Before choosing a large poster, open the photograph and look at the subject. Are the eyes or other important details in focus? Is motion blur part of the photograph, or does it obscure the feature you want to see? Are there obvious compression blocks or a heavily filtered texture? More pixels can help preserve detail, but they do not make every blurred photograph sharp.

Find the image’s pixel dimensions in its information panel. A file size such as 2MB describes storage, not a universal maximum print size. The print decision also depends on the crop, focus, subject detail and intended viewing distance. Our phone-photo size guide explains how to use the dimensions rather than guess from the phone model.

If your only copy came through a message, see how to obtain a better version of a WhatsApp photograph. The same source-file questions apply to a poster. For an older physical print, a careful scan is usually a more controlled starting point than photographing it at an angle.

Choose a shape that protects the picture

The relationship between width and height is the photograph’s aspect ratio. When the poster has a different ratio, filling the paper may require cropping some of the image. A border or another print size may preserve more of it.

For example, a hypothetical 6000 × 4000-pixel landscape image has a 3:2 ratio. A 30 × 20cm print has that same shape. A 30 × 30cm square does not. If you fill the square by cropping the width alone, you retain 4000 × 4000 pixels and remove one-third of the original width in total. The loss may be harmless in an open landscape and important in a group portrait.

Check faces, paws, hands, ears and any wording near the edges. Do not choose a square simply because the frame is convenient, then discover that part of the subject has disappeared. Preview the actual composition. Our custom-size poster preparation guide covers proportion and crop decisions in more detail.

How much detail does a poster need?

Pixels per inch, or PPI, describes the image pixels available for each printed inch. Printer dots per inch describes the output device and is a separate measurement. A high printer resolution does not replace missing image detail.

For planning, divide the pixels remaining after the crop by the printed length in inches. These are calculated examples for the image area, not promises about every file:

Print example At 300 PPI At 150 PPI
10 × 8 inches 3000 × 2400 pixels 1500 × 1200 pixels
20 × 16 inches 6000 × 4800 pixels 3000 × 2400 pixels
30 × 20 inches 9000 × 6000 pixels 4500 × 3000 pixels

A crisp file at a lower PPI may be suitable for a larger display viewed from farther away. A close-viewed print with fine lettering can be more demanding. Sharpness and the actual picture still matter. Increasing the pixel count with AI creates a larger file, but the added detail needs inspection. Our AI photo-improvement guide explains that distinction.

Already have a frame? Measure the print space

Use the dimensions of the paper the frame holds, rather than its outer moulding. If you can safely remove an existing insert, measure it flat. A mount can cover part of the print, so check the visible opening as well as the space behind it.

Record width and height in the same units. Make sure the chosen orientation matches the photograph. When YI2C’s supported custom-size option fits your requirements, you can enter the dimensions rather than force the image into an A size. The creator confirms the available dimensions and current price.

Buying the frame separately is useful when you already have one, want a particular style or prefer to see frame finishes in person. It also means the poster price is not the price of a complete framed display. Allow for that additional purchase when comparing suppliers.

Compare paper, framing and the full price

Compare the dimensions you actually want, the paper surface, the printing process and what arrives in the parcel. An unframed paper print and a complete framed picture are different purchases. Include any frame you need, delivery and the number of prints in the total.

GSM tells you the weight of the paper, but it cannot tell you everything about the finished picture. The paper’s finish, the original image, the inks and the way colour is managed also matter. For YI2C posters, the 230gsm Fine Art Pure White Matt paper and our stated printing process are included as standard.

Published options checked on 9 October 2026:

Provider and product Published options relevant to the decision Who should investigate it?
YI2C photo posters 230gsm Fine Art Pure White Matt paper; Epson SureColor SC-P20000; genuine Epson inks; ONYX RIP with a paper-matched colour profile. Unframed prints in standard and supported custom sizes. Artists and photographers printing their own work, or anyone choosing a personal picture for a separate frame.
Photobox photo posters 200gsm paper; standard, glossy and extra matte finishes; framed options. Someone who wants to compare paper finishes or buy a frame with the print.

This is a comparison of published specifications, not a physical print test or a claim that one paper weight wins. Check the selected size, finish and delivery in the current basket. A supplier’s starting price may apply to a different format from the picture you are ordering.

What do YI2C photo posters cost?

These are our delivered prices for unframed posters, including VAT. The size you choose changes the amount; the paper and printing standard come as part of the product. The price shown in the poster builder is the price you pay.

Prices checked on 9 October 2026:

Size Paper dimensions Poster price
A5 14.8 × 21cm £5.99
A4 21 × 29.7cm £8.99

We give you a straightforward everyday price for the paper, printing and service we provide. When you compare us with another supplier, compare the same size and finish, then include delivery and any offer that applies to the prints you actually want.

See current poster and canvas prices and offer terms. Posters are unframed; a frame bought elsewhere is a separate purchase.

Why choose Your Image 2 Canvas?

We are a family-run print workshop, established in 2007, and we take pride in printing pictures properly. Your poster is produced and checked in West Yorkshire, using the paper, inks and colour workflow described above.

Choose us for a considered matt finish, a size that suits your picture and a clear delivered price. For a time-sensitive order, use our delivery guide to check the working-day schedule before ordering.

There are also reasons to choose another route. If you need a glossy paper finish or a frame supplied with the poster, compare a provider that offers it. If you want the photograph stretched over wood, look at our photo canvas prints. A good choice starts with the product that suits the picture.

How to order your photo poster

  1. Choose the original photograph and check its focus and dimensions.
  2. Measure the intended display or frame and decide the orientation.
  3. Open Photo Poster Prints and choose a standard or supported custom size.
  4. Preview the composition, keeping important details clear of the crop and any mount.
  5. Review the crop, price, quantity and delivery information before ordering.

For a date-sensitive gift, read the current delivery schedule. Same-day dispatch and expected arrival are different parts of the process. If you are unsure about the only photograph you have, ask the team before choosing a large print.

Photo poster questions

Can I print a photo from my phone as a poster?

Yes, when the file suits the chosen dimensions and crop. Use the original image and check focus as well as pixel count. A phone photograph does not have one fixed maximum size.

Is an A4 poster a framed picture?

YI2C’s A4 poster is the paper print. It is supplied unframed. A frame bought separately changes the total cost and overall dimensions of the display.

Can you print a poster to fit a frame I already own?

Use the supported custom-size option and enter the required paper dimensions. Measure the insert or internal print space, not the outside of the frame. Confirm that the dimensions are available in the creator.

Will a 2MB photograph be suitable?

File size alone cannot answer that. Check the pixel dimensions, compression, crop and focus. A smaller sharp print may be a better choice than enlarging a poor source beyond what it can support.

Can a poster be used for a wedding, pet or family photograph?

Yes. Choose the picture, crop and display that suit the subject. For a photographer’s image, use the print-resolution file you are permitted to print under your agreement.

Do three posters qualify for the print offer?

Yes. Three qualifying physical prints can use 3 for 2, with the cheapest eligible print free. You can choose different photographs or mix qualifying poster and canvas prints. Three qualifying A4 posters at £8.99 each cost £17.98 delivered. Digital JPG downloads are outside the physical-print offer.
