How to hang
a canvas print.

Get the position right. Choose fittings that suit the frame and the wall.

AI-created room illustration. The fitted-back photograph below is our own.

To hang a canvas print, check its finished weight, the fittings on the back and the type of wall. Choose a fixing that suits all three, measure where the hanger actually meets the wall, then hang and level the print. No-drill options can help in a compatible setup, but the frame surface matters as well as the weight.

We put plenty of care into making your canvas. Once it arrives, a few minutes spent checking the position and fittings will help you get it looking right on the wall. Here is how to make that decision without guessing.

Start with the back of your canvas.

A stretched canvas has a timber frame behind the picture. A floating-frame canvas adds a separate outer frame, which changes the finished weight and the shape of the back. Check the print you have received rather than assume every canvas uses the same fitting.

Look for the actual hanging fitting and how it is intended to engage with a wall hook or screw. Do not assume every metal part is a wall hanger: some fittings hold the canvas inside its outer frame. Keep those retaining parts in place.

This photograph shows a finished framed canvas, rather than the loose contents of every optional hanging kit. If you are unsure which fitting you have, send us a photograph of the back through our contact page before buying wall hardware.

Brick or masonry, plasterboard and timber need different fixing decisions. A kit fitted to the print does not identify your wall or make one screw suitable for every surface. Follow the wall-fixing manufacturer's directions for the actual wall construction and finished load. If you cannot identify the wall, get advice before making a hole.

Before drilling, check for concealed cables and pipes using an appropriate detector and its instructions. A detector has limits; an apparently clear reading is not a reason to ignore other evidence about what is behind the wall. Bosch's wall-mounting guidance explains why checking the wall comes first.

Decide where it looks right before you fix anything.

Hold the canvas in place with help, or use a paper template matching its outside dimensions. Look from the position where you normally sit or stand. Over a sideboard or sofa, judge the picture with the furniture beneath it, rather than automatically centring it on the whole wall.

There is no single correct height for every room. Leave comfortable space around the print and make sure it will not be knocked by a door or somebody passing. For a large canvas, get another person to support it while you check the position.

Measure the hanging point, not just the top edge.

A mark at the desired top of the print is usually not the mark for the wall fixing. Measure down from the top of the complete print to the point where its hanger will actually rest on the wall hook or screw. A wire fitting needs measuring under its working tension. With two hangers, measure both positions and their spacing.

For one hanging contact point, the arithmetic is: wall contact height = chosen centre height + half the outside print height − hanger drop. This gives the contact point where the print rests. A separate wall hook may have its own offset between that point and its screw hole; use the hook's instructions to mark that hole.

Example measurements, not a recommended height for every room. Measure your own print, fitting and viewing position. Tap to enlarge.

Work out your hanging contact height.

Use centimetres and the complete outside height, including an outer frame if fitted.

Positioning arithmetic only. It does not choose wall fixings, assess load capacity or account for the offset within a separate wall hook.

Hang it, then check the level.

Install the selected wall hardware using its own instructions. Support the canvas by the frame, engage the hanger fully and check that it is seated before letting go. Use a spirit level along a suitable rigid frame edge, without pressing into the printed face. Keep supporting the print while you make any adjustment.

If it leans or moves, check the engagement and fixing positions. Do not solve a loose or unsuitable fitting by wedging something against the printed surface.

Can you hang a canvas with Command strips?

Sometimes, but ordinary Picture Hanging Strips and a dedicated Canvas Hanger are different products. Check the exact product and the back of your print before deciding.

Picture Hanging Strips: the contact surface matters.

3M's instructions exclude paper and fabric. Its UK surface guide also lists bare wood and MDF as unsuitable. Do not stick ordinary picture strips straight onto canvas fabric or assume that the unfinished-looking rear surfaces in our photograph are compatible. Both the wall and frame contact areas must meet the product guidance. Check 3M's surface guide.

Use the exact pack's limits for the finished frame's weight and dimensions, and its specified number and arrangement of pairs. Weigh the complete item, including any outer frame. Adding arbitrary extra strips or hooks is not a substitute for a rated setup. See an example of 3M's product-specific limits.

A dedicated canvas hanger is another option.

A purpose-made canvas hanger attaches to the wall and supports compatible rear frame construction, rather than relying on strips stuck to canvas fabric. Check that your frame actually fits and has the necessary clearance. An outer floating frame may change that fit.

For example, the UK Command Jumbo Canvas Hanger 17045 listed when this guide was prepared specifies a maximum of 2 kg and 60 × 90 cm. Those limits belong to that model. They are not the ratings for every Command product, and this is not confirmation that it fits every YI2C canvas.

Follow the application and removal instructions.

For its UK Picture Hanging Strips, 3M specifies a preparation and pressing sequence, with an hour before rehanging. Paint must be fully cured: 3M's UK FAQ says to allow at least seven days and check the paint manufacturer's curing time. Read the current pack for the full process and surface preparation; a quick press-and-hang shortcut misses important steps.

When removing the adhesive, follow the specified slow stretch down the wall rather than pulling out towards yourself. Observe the product restrictions, including no wallpaper or weak surfaces, no use over beds and no valuable items. No-drill does not mean suitable for every wall or a guarantee against damage. Use 3M's application and removal guide, alongside your exact pack.

Hanging two or three canvases together.

Lay the prints on the floor first, with a clean protective layer beneath them. Choose whether to align the tops, centres or bottoms. Keep the chosen gaps consistent and measure each frame's actual hanger position; matching front sizes do not prove that every hanger is in precisely the same place.

For three equal-width canvases in one row, the total width is three print widths + two gaps. Three 40 cm wide prints with 5 cm gaps need 130 cm across. Use the outside dimensions of floating frames, not only the canvas inside them.

Paper templates let you try that arrangement before installing the fixings. Our canvas and poster size guide can help compare dimensions.

Ask ChatGPT to help plan the arrangement.

Use your measured dimensions. This prompt asks for layout calculations, not a judgment about wall safety or suitable fixings.

Not sure what is on the back? Ask us.

A clear photo of the complete back and a closer view of the fitting are more useful than trying to describe it from memory. Tell us the outside dimensions and the wall type if you know it. We can help identify the print's construction; the wall-fixing choice still needs to suit the actual wall and load.

If you are choosing a new print, explore our canvas prints and floating-frame canvas options. Choose the picture and finish you want, then plan how it will sit on your wall.

Canvas hanging questions.

Can I hang a canvas without drilling?

A compatible no-drill product may suit the print and wall. Check its approved surfaces, weight, size and frame fit. Ordinary picture strips and canvas-specific hangers are separate options.

Can I stick picture strips straight onto the canvas back?

Do not apply them to canvas fabric or paper. Bare timber or MDF is also outside the cited 3M surface guidance. Check the actual frame construction before choosing an adhesive method.

Does a floating-frame canvas need a different check?

Yes. Measure and weigh the complete framed item. The outer frame changes the back profile and can affect hanger clearance and suitable contact areas.

Does a hanging kit include the right fixing for every wall?

No single fixing suits every wall. Check the kit you have selected and choose wall hardware for the actual wall construction and finished weight.

How high should I hang my canvas?

Choose the position from your normal viewing distance and the furniture around it. A paper template helps. Then calculate the actual hanging contact height from the print's outside height and hanger drop.

Can I add more adhesive hooks to hold a heavier canvas?

Do not assume their ratings add together. Use a product and configuration explicitly rated for the complete print, following its manufacturer.
