Make your own word art with AI

Your words, your memories and a style that belongs in your home.

Created from scratch with AI for this guide. Emma, Daniel and the memories are fictional example details. The actual saved image is 1054 × 1492 pixels.

A name, a date or a phrase that only makes sense to your family can be the start of a lovely print. AI gives you another way to arrange those words: bold lettering, a quiet little message, a wedding illustration or a storybook dragon with your child's name.

The useful part is making something personal enough to keep. This guide takes you from an empty page to a design you can refine, check and prepare for a poster or canvas. We will build an anniversary example from scratch, change one line, and explain what to do when an edit goes wrong.

Start with the words. Keep a correctly spelled copy of them beside you throughout. A beautiful arrangement with the wrong date is still the wrong print.

Choose between our Word Art creator and a custom AI design

Our Word Art creator gives you designs with their own wording fields, colour palettes and typography choices. Choose a design, enter your words, check the preview, then download a JPG free or choose a printed finish. Our free personalised Word Art guide explains that route.

The three app examples here show a pet print, a design full of family memories and a wedding heart. Look at the hierarchy: the names or main word lead, while the smaller details reward a closer look.

For a composition outside those templates, you can develop an image in ChatGPT. You describe the idea and can attach an image as a reference. The downloaded result is picture artwork. Its letters do not automatically become editable text fields, and importing it into another app does not recreate those fields.

Choose the app when you want to personalise one of its layouts directly. Choose the AI route when you want to explore an original arrangement or illustration and are happy to check each result. Either route still needs a final spelling, crop and file-quality check.

1. Gather the words before you ask for an image

Make a short list in a note or document. For an anniversary, collect the names as the couple actually use them, the correct date, a place and a few shared memories. For a birthday, think about the person's habits, hobbies and sayings. For a pet, use the little details you recognise every day.

Separate facts from ideas. Names and dates must remain exact; a proposed heading can be changed until you like it. Check dates with the person who knows, rather than asking AI to infer them. Decide whether you want “and”, an ampersand or a particular punctuation style, then keep it consistent.

Our pet example starts with “TWO DOGS. ONE VERY HAPPY HOME.”, gives BELLE & DELFIE the attention, and adds “DOUBLE THE MISCHIEF. TWICE THE LOVE.” You could include muddy walks or a favourite sleeping spot, but those three lines already tell a story.

Organise the wording into three levels: the main phrase, the names or date, and the smaller supporting memories. Give one thing the strongest emphasis. If everything shouts, the reader has no obvious place to start.

Start with your words and room

Replace the square brackets and keep only the wording you want to appear. Ask for flat artwork, then check the downloaded result before choosing a print size.

Open ChatGPT ↗

2. Choose the shape, room and style

Measure the intended space and choose portrait, landscape or square before generating. A narrow portrait arrangement will not automatically fit a wide space without moving the words or cropping them. Think about the size from which the finished piece will normally be viewed.

A print above a sofa may need a short phrase that reads across the room. A smaller piece on a desk can contain more intimate detail. Leave enough space around the lettering for it to feel deliberate rather than packed to the edges.

Describe the look in everyday terms: fine lettering with generous spacing; heavy overlapping letters; a simple heart of words; a few clean lines on a plain background. Choose a small palette from the room, or one deliberate accent. Black and open space can feel calm; pink, blue and oversized type can be lively.

The six supplied AI designs below show different possibilities: two treatments of “LOVE OF MY LIFE”, a pet design, a mother tribute, a birthday composition and decorative “FIVE STAR” lettering. The last is an artwork example, not a customer review or rating of our service. Compare the lettering, contrast and breathing space rather than assuming more words make a better design.

3. Write a short brief that can be checked

A useful brief answers six questions: what is the occasion, which exact words must appear, what leads the design, what shape is needed, which colours suit it, and what should be left out? You do not need a paragraph of grand adjectives.

Ask for flat artwork with the whole design visible. A framed print in a beautiful room can help you imagine it on the wall, but that scene is not the artwork to upload for printing. Keep the room, frame, furniture and photographic shadows out of the requested print file.

Use the editable prompts as starting points. Replace the square brackets, delete choices you do not need and reread the text before sending. An instruction such as “use exactly these words” gives a clear target; it is not a guarantee that every letter will be right.

4. Build an anniversary design from scratch

For this tutorial, we are using fictional details for EMMA & DANIEL. The main phrase is “TEN YEARS OF US”, with the dates 24 SEPTEMBER 2016 and 24 SEPTEMBER 2026. The smaller memories are WE MET IN YORK, OUR FIRST HOME, SUNDAY WALKS, SEASIDE DAYS, LAUGHTER, KINDNESS and ALWAYS US.

Before generating, decide what you want the eye to find first. Here, the heading gives the occasion, the names make it personal and the dates anchor it. The memories provide the closer detail. They should not compete with the names for equal space.

Organise an anniversary brief before generating

These are fictional tutorial details. Replace them with checked names, dates and memories. This prompt plans the hierarchy first, without requesting an image yet.

Open ChatGPT ↗

  1. Open ChatGPT and start a conversation for this design. Paste the completed brief, including the exact words.
  2. Ask it to create the image. If you first receive a written proposal, review it and ask for the artwork using the agreed wording.
  3. Wait for the image, then inspect the full composition and the small text. Compare every line against your saved list.
  4. Open the generated image and use Save to download a copy before requesting changes. Keep your brief and the downloaded file together so that you can return to this version.

Create the anniversary artwork from scratch

Edit the wording, shape and style. Keep one checked text list to compare with the generated image; a request for exact letters still needs proofreading.

Open ChatGPT ↗

The first generated anniversary artwork is shown at the top of this page; the comparison below shows it beside the follow-up edit.

This is a worked design exercise, not a client's anniversary story. The actual result is worth examining as carefully as the brief: which words are prominent, which details need a closer look, and whether any wording or spacing needs correction.

5. Refine one thing at a time

Do the first correction in the same conversation while the relevant image and instructions are still present. Identify the version you mean and make one clear request. “Replace SUNDAY WALKS with COFFEE TOGETHER; keep the other approved wording” is easier to inspect than “make it more personal and change the colours too”.

Give the exact old wording and exact replacement. For a name, include the full corrected spelling. For a date, write the whole intended date rather than “change the year”. Restate the approved text if there is any possibility of confusion.

Change one phrase, then inspect the whole result

Use the last good full image as the reference. Replace the exact old wording and replacement below if you are editing another design.

Open ChatGPT ↗

The edit changed the requested phrase correctly. The dates, remaining wording and overall layout look close to the first version, but small pixel changes occurred elsewhere too. Both downloads are 1054 × 1492 pixels. The follow-up edit did not increase the available resolution.

After an edit, check the whole image again, not only the changed line. A request to preserve the layout is an instruction, not a locked layer. The generator may also alter spacing, other letters or decorative details. Compare the new file with the saved version before deciding which to keep.

For a colour change, name both the current and wanted colours and explain what stays put. “Use a soft blue background with dark navy lettering; keep the wording and line breaks” is clearer than “make it cooler”. For layout, say which item should move, grow or gain space rather than asking for general improvement.

Change the palette or a layout detail clearly

Keep one change category per request. Fill in the approved wording so the reference stays clear, and check all parts of the new image afterwards.

Open ChatGPT ↗

If an edit spoils something you liked

Return to the last good version. Do not keep building corrections on a result whose wording or composition has drifted away from the brief. Attach that good file if needed, repeat the exact approved text and identify the single change you still want.

If you start a new conversation, attach the last full-size file and paste the brief again. Explain whether the attachment is a visual reference or the version you want revised. A new conversation should not have to guess which earlier colours, names or dates you approved.

Save versions with useful names, such as anniversary-v01-original, anniversary-v02-coffee and anniversary-v03-blue. Keep the extension supplied by the download. A small note saying what changed is more useful than a folder full of files called “final”.

Restart from the last good version

Attach the last version you liked, rather than the unsuccessful edit. This is also useful when continuing in a new conversation.

Open ChatGPT ↗

6. Use a style reference thoughtfully

You can begin with a reference you own or are allowed to use. Add it through the conversation's image/file attachment control, or drag the image into the message. Say which attachment is the style reference, then describe the qualities you like: letter spacing, contrast between fine and heavy type, a restrained palette, an off-centre arrangement or a large ampersand.

Then supply your own words and ask for a new composition using those qualities. A reference gives you a vocabulary for the brief; it does not have to dictate every letter position or decorative detail. Describe the direction you want to explore rather than asking for an exact trace.

Our BELLE & DELFIE example starts with a spacious app design and explores a different treatment of the short wording. Compare the hierarchy and readability, not just the brighter colours. If the names are harder to read, a striking effect may not be the right choice for that print.

Develop a new design from a reference

Upload a design you own or have permission to use. Describe the qualities you like, then change the words, palette and arrangement to make a new composition.

7. Combine words with an illustration or photograph

A wedding print

Names and a date can give a wedding picture a simple purpose. Try the couple's names as the main wording, with the date beneath. A short line from your own vows can work too, provided it leaves enough room for the picture.

The OLIVER & JEN example uses a generated wedding illustration with “22 MAY 2019”. It shows an idea for combining an illustration and typography. It is not an example of adding words while preserving a real client's wedding photograph.

A retained wedding illustration with personalised names and a date. It is generated tutorial artwork, not a real client photograph.

Create a wedding illustration with names and a date

This creates an illustration. For an unchanged real wedding photograph, add the wording on a separate text layer instead.

Open ChatGPT ↗

For your actual wedding photograph, keep the original safely. If the people and picture must stay as photographed, place the words on a separate text layer in an editor instead of asking an image generator to recreate the photograph. Look for quiet sky, a clear wall or a plain area beside the image, away from faces.

Our guide to adding words to a photo explains that route. Check that you have permission to reproduce the photograph and any text you include. Adding lettering does not repair a blurred source photo.

A child's name with a character they love

A nursery print can be playful without becoming crowded. Start with one character, one name and one short line. In the dragon example, the gentle illustration leads and HARRY has clear space, with “DREAM BIG, LITTLE ONE” as the supporting words.

Describe the mood and palette as well as the subject. A green dragon, warm peach scarf, pinwheel and soft meadow colours make a different piece from a blue dragon against a night sky. Choose what suits the child and the room.

Make a named storybook print

Use your own character illustration as a reference, or describe a new one. Check the resulting character and every letter before printing.

Open ChatGPT ↗

If you use an existing illustration as a reference, compare the character after each edit. Check its face, paws, tail and small props as carefully as the letters. A name change should not distract you from noticing that the pinwheel or expression has changed too.

8. Fix spelling with the method that suits the job

For a simple generated design, you can request a corrected version with the exact words. Check it from the beginning again. Repeatedly regenerating a design to fix one tiny letter may become frustrating when other details keep changing.

For dependable text editing, build the wording as real text layers. You can generate a background or illustration without lettering and add the words separately. That lets you change a name, date or line break without requesting another interpretation of the entire picture.

If the wrong letters are already part of a flattened image, typing the right ones on top does not remove the old marks. Use a clean background or reconstruct that area carefully. On a plain design, rebuilding the whole typographic layout can give you better control than patching individual letters.

A practical text-layer workflow in Photopea

  1. In Photopea, choose File → New and enter the intended pixel width and height. An A3 portrait planning example at 300 PPI is 3508 × 4961 pixels; it is the front artwork, not an added canvas-side allowance.
  2. For a plain typographic design, choose your background. For an illustration or photograph, use File → Open and Place and position that source on its own layer. Keep the original file separately.
  3. Choose the Type tool, click where the words should start and type a short line. Set the font, size and colour.
  4. Use separate text layers for a heading, names and smaller memories when they need independent placement. Move and align them deliberately.
  5. Check contrast against the actual background. Leave space around faces and keep essential wording inside the intended visible area.
  6. Use File → Save as PSD for your editable project. Use File → Export As → PNG or JPG for a separate finished picture, checking that the export keeps your intended full dimensions.

The PSD keeps the project structure; the exported picture is the finished image. Keep both, alongside your source photo or illustration. Reopening an ordinary flattened PNG or JPG does not recreate the original text layers.

9. Proofread the downloaded version

Read names letter by letter against your approved wording. Check dates, numbers, apostrophes, ampersands and repeated or missing words. A decorative letter can look plausible while actually being the wrong character. Ask someone who knows the names to check too.

Inspect the small words closely, then view the full design at a realistic size. Lettering that only reads when you zoom right in may be too small for its role on the wall. Look at the contrast and the spaces between lines as well as the spelling.

You can ask AI for another proofreading pass, but treat it as assistance. If it cannot read a word clearly, it should say so. You approve the wording; neither a confident answer nor a clean-looking thumbnail is proof that the file is ready.

Check the lettering against your original wording

Upload the finished artwork and edit the correct text below. Use this as an extra check, then proofread the actual file yourself.

10. Check the pixels, proportions and print edges

Download the actual image rather than taking a screenshot or saving a small chat preview. Open that downloaded file and check its pixel width and height. Keep the original download, and avoid repeatedly resaving JPG copies while you edit.

Aspect ratio describes the shape. Pixel dimensions describe how many picture samples you have. A portrait-shaped image can have the right shape for a print and still contain too little detail for small lettering. Conversely, a detailed image can need cropping because its proportions differ from the paper or canvas.

For reference, these are approximate pixel dimensions for standard A sizes at 300 pixels per inch. They are planning figures, not a requirement that makes every image good or a promise that an AI download contains those pixels.

Front or paper sizeDimensionsApproximate pixels at 300 PPI
A421 × 29.7 cm2480 × 3508
A329.7 × 42 cm3508 × 4961
A242 × 59.4 cm4961 × 7016

For example, the same 2480 × 3508 file gives roughly 300 PPI at A4, 212 PPI at A3 and 150 PPI at A2. Its pixel count has not grown; the pixels are being spread over a larger area. Sharpness, letter detail and any crop still need checking.

The actual AI anniversary image in this tutorial is 1054 × 1492 pixels, as is the edited version. That is roughly 127 PPI at A4 or 90 PPI at A3, before any crop. Those are the delivered files, not the much larger planning figures in the table. Fine lettering needs a closer assessment before choosing a large print.

Writing “maximum resolution” or “300 DPI” in a prompt does not establish the delivered pixel count or restore a fuzzy letter. Upscaling estimates more pixels; it does not turn uncertain AI lettering into a correctly drawn font. For important small type, consider rebuilding the text at the intended design size.

PNG is useful for raster lettering and flat colour because it avoids JPEG compression artefacts. A high-quality JPG can suit photographic artwork. Converting an already blurred or compressed file to PNG does not repair it. Keep an editable source project for future changes.

Our image-size guide explains pixels and physical size, and our quality guide shows what to inspect. Leave essential words comfortably inside the canvas front; side treatments, frame lips and mounts can affect the visible edge. Check the chosen crop and finish.

Build your own editable layout for crisp type

The anniversary example below shows the same word list rebuilt with separately typed text, in a different composition. Its A3 PNG was exported at 3508 × 4961 pixels. This shows what a fresh text layout can achieve; it is not an upscaled AI image or an automatic conversion of the AI lettering.

You can build your own version in an editor such as Inkscape, using the names, dates and memories that mean something to you. Keep the words as editable text while you arrange them. Save that project for future changes, then export a separate PNG for checking and printing. The flattened PNG does not contain the editable text fields.

A separate typeset companion using the same words. This is a new text layout, exported at 3508 × 4961 pixels from editable SVG; it is not the AI artwork enlarged.
  1. Create a new document in Inkscape and choose the page size and orientation for your intended print. Start with a blank page and keep your checked word list beside you.
  2. Choose the Text tool and type your title, names, date and memories as separate text elements. Arrange the main words first, then add the smaller supporting details.
  3. Check the fit after each change. A longer name may need a smaller size or a different line break. Choose fonts available on your device, and check the whole arrangement again if a font is substituted when the project is reopened elsewhere.
  4. Keep the essential wording inside the page margins. Save your own SVG project to retain editable text, and keep a version before making major changes.
  5. Export your design as a PNG using the Page area so the intended margins remain. If you are following the A3 portrait example at 300 pixels per inch, check for approximately 3508 × 4961 pixels in the exported file. Choose output dimensions for your own intended print size.
  6. Open your exported PNG separately and inspect every line. Keep both your editable SVG project and that checked PNG, so a later spelling correction does not mean starting again.

This approach gives you direct control over lettering, spacing and corrections. It does not recreate the painted or illustrated qualities of an AI image, so choose the method that suits the design rather than expecting the two compositions to be identical.

Plan the print size and inspect the layout

Enter dimensions from the actual downloaded file. This helps organise checks; it cannot certify sharpness or printing quality from a preview.

11. Turn the finished artwork into a poster or canvas

Choose poster printing for a smooth paper finish or canvas printing for texture and depth. Judge the design and finish together, especially when it contains fine type.

Upload externally made, finished artwork through the ordinary photo-print route as one image. Check its size, orientation, front crop and complete price before ordering. The Word Art creator is for its own templates and wording fields; it does not turn your uploaded AI picture back into editable names and dates.

If a file or crop worries you, ask our team before ordering. Keep the approved download, exact wording and any layered project. A later birthday, new surname or different print size is much easier when you know which version you used.

Help when you get stuck

Can I make personalised word art without using AI?

Yes. Our Word Art page shows designs you can personalise in our creator. Enter your words, try the available colours and typography, and download a JPG free or choose a printed finish. It is a useful route when you want direct wording fields rather than asking an image generator to draw the lettering. You still need to check the names, dates and layout before downloading or ordering.

Why did ChatGPT give me a written answer instead of an image?

A brief can be interpreted as a request for ideas. Read the suggested arrangement, correct anything you do not want, then explicitly ask for an image using that approved brief. Keep the exact wording in the request. Image availability and controls can vary, so consult the current OpenAI help if you cannot access image creation rather than assuming a particular button or allowance applies to every account.

Why did another name or detail change when I only asked for one correction?

An image edit is not the same as changing a locked text layer. Other parts of the image can shift even when you ask to preserve them. Return to the last good full file, request one specific correction and compare the complete result again. If exact typography keeps drifting, a clean background with separately editable text may be the better method for finishing the design.

Can I change the names after downloading the design?

A downloaded raster image contains letters as pixels, rather than separate name fields. You can request another generated version, carefully rebuild the lettering in an editor, or return to a layered project if you kept one. Changing a filename or opening the image in a different program does not recreate live text. For future anniversaries, keep the PSD or other editable project as well as the final picture.

Can I put our words on a real wedding photograph?

Yes. Use your original photograph and add wording on separate text layers, leaving the source safely untouched. Choose a quiet area for readable lettering, away from faces and important details. The OLIVER & JEN illustration in this guide demonstrates an illustrated idea, not proof that a generator will preserve real people. If the photograph itself must stay as photographed, use the editor workflow and inspect the exported result.

What if my design looks sharp on my phone but soft when enlarged?

A small screen can hide weak letter edges and limited pixels. Download the actual file, check its dimensions and inspect both a close view and the intended overall layout. A larger print spreads the same pixels over more space. Consider a smaller size, simpler wording, or rebuilding the text at a suitable design size. A changed DPI label or a larger file size in MB is not evidence of recovered detail.

Will the printed colours match my room exactly?

A reference can guide the palette, but a screen and a printed surface display colour differently. The light in your room also changes how a print looks. Aim for a combination that works with your room rather than an exact paint or fabric match from a screen preview. When changing colours, identify the background and lettering separately, then check that the smallest words still have enough contrast.

Which files should I keep for editing and printing?

They serve different jobs. Keep PSD for a layered Photopea project, or SVG for an editable text layout you build in Inkscape. Export PNG for clean raster type and flat artwork, or a high-quality JPG when that suits a photographic design and your upload. Check the exported file itself. None of these extensions improves detail that was missing before export, and a flattened PNG is not a substitute for keeping your editable text project.

Can you print artwork made in another app?

Yes: upload the finished image through our photo-print route for a poster or canvas. The file needs to contain the words, background and picture in their intended positions. Check the resolution, spelling and crop first, then review the current price for the finish you choose. If you need help with the file, contact us before ordering; do not treat an attractive preview as a complete print-quality assessment.
